Responsible gaming

Responsible gaming at new online casinos

Play only if you are 18 or older and it stays fun. A casino in its first years has little history to judge it by, so the limits you set yourself matter more than at a site you already know.

Before your first deposit

  1. Budget

Decide what you can afford to lose this month and treat it as spent.

  2. Limits

Set a deposit limit in the account before you claim any bonus.

  3. Small

Deposit a small amount at a casino you do not know and request a small withdrawal early.

  4. Debit

Pay by debit card, never on credit. Casinos licensed in Ireland may not accept credit cards at all.

  5. Help

If it stops being fun, stop, and call the Gambling Awareness Trust on 1800 936 725, any time.

So what

Why new casinos need extra care

  • No track record

A new casino has not had time to show how it handles withdrawals and complaints. Keep your first deposit small.

  • No Irish licence yet

Online casinos that take Irish players hold foreign licences, so Irish player protections such as the ban on credit card payments do not bind them. Set your own limits.

  • Big packages, many deposits

Large welcome packages are spread over several deposits and can pull you into depositing more than you planned.

  • Tools from day one

If you cannot set a deposit limit in the account menu, do not deposit.

What responsible gaming means

Responsible gaming means keeping casino play a paid-for pastime that you control: limits on money and time, an understanding of the odds, and a clear line that gambling is never a way to earn money.

Players, casinos and regulators each have a part. You set your limits and watch your habits. A casino should offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. In Ireland, the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 gives the new regulator, the GRAI, powers to set and enforce such protections for licensed operators.

Warning signs

  • Chasing losses: playing on to win back what you have lost.
  • Borrowing to play: loans, credit or money from family to fund gambling.
  • Hiding it: keeping play or losses secret from people close to you.
  • Restlessness: feeling irritable or anxious when you try to cut down.

A simple test: stop completely for a few days. If that is hard, or you notice you are using money meant for bills, talk to someone. The GRAI cites ESRI research showing that harmful gambling in Ireland is far more common than earlier estimates suggested, so you are not alone in this.

Habits that help

  • Set a budget before you play and stop when it is gone.
  • Set a time limit and keep play out of work and sleep time.
  • Use small stakes: €2 spins on a €50 budget last longer than €10 spins.
  • Walk away after a win or a loss you had planned for, and never chase.
  • Use self-exclusion if you want a break, and add blocking software to cover other sites.

Tools to look for in your account

Look for these before you deposit. A casino that offers none of them is a warning sign.

Responsible gaming: questions

What limits should I set at a new casino?

A deposit limit before your first deposit, then a loss limit and a session time limit. Set them lower than you think you need; lowering a limit usually applies at once, raising one is often delayed.

Should I take the welcome bonus?

Only if you have read the terms. At 35 times wagering, a €100 bonus means €3,500 in bets before you can withdraw it, which can keep you playing far longer than you planned.

What if a casino has no limit tools?

Do not deposit. A casino that lets you set no limits and offers no self-exclusion is not one to trust with your money.

Is there a national self-exclusion register in Ireland?

Not yet in operation. Until there is, self-exclude at each casino you use and add a blocking app such as Gamban to cover the rest.

Is gambling a way to make money?

No. Casino games are built so the casino keeps a share of all money staked over time. Budget for it as money spent on entertainment.
