Poker tips for new casino players

Poker is the one casino game where you play other people, not the house. That makes knowledge and discipline worth money: tight starting hands, good position and a bankroll that survives bad runs.

Start at the lowest stakes, or in free games, until the rankings and betting rounds are second nature.

Habits that pay

  • Play fewer hands: fold most starting hands, especially from early position.
  • Use position: acting last tells you what others did before you decide.
  • Bet with a reason: for value with strong hands, or as a planned bluff, never out of habit.
  • Watch opponents: note who bets big with weak hands and who only bets the nuts.

Bankroll and mistakes

Keep 20 to 30 buy-ins for the stake you play: €100 to €150 for €5 tournaments. Drop down when the bankroll falls.

  • Playing too many hands.
  • Calling to 'see one more card' without the odds to justify it.
  • Chasing losses by moving up in stakes.
  • Playing tired or on tilt.

Casino poker against the dealer is a different game with a fixed house edge; our poker hub compares those games.

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.

You must be 18 or older, and older in some countries. A casino can ask for ID before your first withdrawal, and new casinos often do.
